Where Are You Originally From?

Where Are You Originally From?

Where are you originally from? I have been asked many times by the non-hispanic community, “Where are you originally from?” If I answer with a state I am quickly interrupted by, “No, ORIGINALLY like what country are you from?” If you can picture the attitude-driven phrase “excuse me” as a facial expression, that’s exactly what my face looked like. I of course respond with, “The United States just like you.” It baffles me anytime I am asked that question and it turns out by one look people either assume I am from Mexico or am Native American. Personally, I think…

Everyone Needs and Deserves Self-Care

Everyone Needs and Deserves Self-Care

Everyone needs and deserves self-care. If you may not know, self-care is "the process of taking care of oneself with behaviors that promote health.” So how would you as a person take time to care for yourself? Well, what I do is: Take time to exercise, usually in the evenings so it’s not too hot. Getting regular exercise boosts your mood and improves your health. Why Setting Boundaries Is So Important

Why Setting Boundaries Is So Important

As a young girl, I spent many Saturdays going to Philly with my mom. We didn’t do the typical sightseeing or visit the many museums that this amazing city had to offer. Instead, we visited my grandmother, who, by the time I was school-aged, was a widow living in an assisted living apartment complex on the outskirts of the northeast quadrant of town.  We’d go into the apartment and no sooner as I had turned on the television did my mom and her mom get to arguing. My mom would ask why the apartment was as junky as it was…

Life as a Skinny Girl

Life as a Skinny Girl

Life as a skinny girl is hard. Especially in the world today. I get many comments saying, “I wish I was that skinny. “I wish I didn’t gain weight like YOU after I eat. “I wish I had the same body as you.” It seems all nice, but to me, it’s not. All I can think of is the bad side of being skinny. “Eat more.” “You’re a walking stick.” “I can see your bones.”  Growing up, I loved being skinny. I dreamed of being a model. When I mentioned my dream to others, they would agree that I had…

All About Little, Old Me

All About Little, Old Me

Short, little, petite, itty-bitty, small, pint-sized, sprite, tiny. My mom promised me I’d be at least 5’4. Surely, she believed, I’d be a good mix of both her and my father and end up right in the middle. Besides, her brother was tall, and her mother-in-law was tall.  So, there was no doubt, that some of those genes would rub off on me, right? Wrong.  As a kid, I was an average size, the average being that everyone else around me was the same size I was. In fact, there were maybe two girls in my classes in grade school…
